Growing a Beard – A trend that has become definition of a man. It has become a sign of maturity and development. A symbol of growth, style and an add on to your personality. Men usually start developing facial hair in the later stage of puberty or adolescence around 15 years of age. Boys as young as 11 have been known to develop facial hair. Despite a lot of false rumors going around, the beard growth basically depends on the genetics. Coming to the point, there are a set of hair follicles all around your body including your face and scalp. It all depends when these hair follicles will be activated The men who reach puberty at a later age have their follicles activated later and will have late facial hair growth.

So, if your father has struggled or never had any facial hair growth then you might also suffer with similar problem because of genetics.

Testosterone and DHT

Testosterone is the male sex hormone and is responsible for development of male reproductive tissues as well as promotion of secondary sexual characteristics like muscle and growth of body hair.

DHT is an androgen sex hormone that contributes to hair growth, muscle gain, fertility, etc. DHT is a natural byproduct of testosterone.

Men with higher level of testosterone and DHT will have high level of beard growth as compared to the men having lower level of these hormones in their body.


Stress increase the level of Cortisol in the body, which is known to reduce the testosterone and DHT level. It is also known to cause sleeping problems which has a negative impact on the strength of hair. This can cause a slower and improper beard growth. Stress also cause hair colour loss. Washing and Moisturizing can have a positive effect on the beard appearance. Wash your face with a good quality face wash whenever you come home after a tiring day of work. Keeping your face open by exfoliating your face helps in removing dead cells and debris which might cause obstacles in facial hair growth. You can even use a leave in conditioner which will nourish the hair and keep it soft and moisturized.

Balanced Diet

Eating a proper balanced diet helps to keep your body healthy. It also helps to keep you fit and fine thus reducing your obesity level. Studies prove that obesity reduces testosterone level. Some food items may help to grow your hair as well as beard properly.

  • Foods high in zinc, such as nuts and chickpeas.
  • Healthy fats, such as those in avocados.
